Golden State Warriors to Retire Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 Jersey
On Tuesday afternoon, the Golden State Warriors declared that they will retire Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey before their game against the Dallas Mavericks on February 23.
Iguodala achieved the remarkable feat of being a four-time NBA champion, securing all his titles with the Warriors (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022). He was honored as the Finals MVP in 2015 when the Warriors triumphed over the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games. Additionally, he helped the team reach the Finals two more times (2016, 2019). Iguodala concluded his career on October 20, 2023, just before turning 40.
“Andre will be remembered as one of the smartest, most cunning, and most distinctive players to ever wear a Warriors jersey,” stated Joe Lacob, the Warriors co-executive chairman and CEO. “With four titles, six Finals appearances, and a Finals MVP, he surpassed our highest expectations.”
Here’s what you need to know about the ceremony for his jersey retirement.
Iguodala’s Career Overview
While Iguodala’s peak years may have been with the Warriors, he also spent eight seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers before joining Golden State. During his time in Philadelphia, he was selected as an All-Star once (2012) and received votes for Defensive Player of the Year six times.
Once he arrived with the Warriors, Iguodala transitioned to a bench role but continued to be instrumental in their success. He was recognized for the 6th Man of the Year award four times during his tenure in Golden State, finishing as a runner-up twice (2016, 2017). Furthermore, he placed fifth for Defensive Player of the Year in his first season with the team (2014).
His exceptional defensive skills were crucial during the 2015 NBA Finals when the Warriors faced LeBron James. Despite not having overwhelming offensive stats, his ability to restrict James’ influence led to him winning the Finals MVP award.
Why Wait Until February 23?
The Warriors are choosing to hold the retirement ceremony on February 23, coinciding with their game against the Mavericks. Klay Thompson, a cherished shooting guard and key figure in the Warriors’ dynasty from 2011 to 2024, joined the Mavericks in the 2024 offseason.
Thompson’s attendance at Iguodala’s jersey retirement will be significant as Iguodala has frequently expressed how crucial Thompson has been to his career.
In an interview conducted in October 2023 after retiring, Iguodala remarked, “Obviously Steph [Curry], Klay [Thompson], and Draymond [Green] are so unique; that combination is incredibly powerful. It’s tough to replicate.” He added, “Without those teammates, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Curry and Green are still active players for the Warriors.
