After the record-setting premiere of “Yellowstone Season 5” Part 2 last week, the Dutton family is once again front and center in everyone’s thoughts.

Fans of the franchise can rejoice that the Dutton family’s story isn’t confined to just “Yellowstone.” There are two successful spinoffs, “1883” and “1923,” both of which have garnered a loyal following.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, “1923” serves as the second prequel to “Yellowstone,” following the limited series “1883,” which premiered in 2021. The prequel “1923” focuses on a fresh generation of Duttons, led by Jacob and Cara Dutton, portrayed by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren respectively, as stated by Paramount+.

The show delves into the challenges of the early 20th century, depicting struggles such as pandemics, severe droughts, and the conclusion of Prohibition that impact the mountain west, home to the Dutton family.

Jacob and Cara Dutton are the ancestors of the present-day Yellowstone Dutton ranch owner, John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner). Jacob is also the brother of James Dutton, the character played by Tim McGraw in “1883.”

‘1923’ Season 2 is ‘essentially the latter half of the season’

Since its premiere on December 18, 2022, “1923” became “the most-watched premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S.,” attracting 7.4 million viewers across the platform and traditional broadcasts, according to a February 2023 release from the network. Additionally, it secured the title of “the biggest cable series premiere of 2022.”

Season 1 left many questions unanswered, and before the season concluded, Paramount+ confirmed that “1923” would return for Season 2.

In a December 2022 interview with Deadline, Sheridan remarked that Season 2 represents “essentially the latter half of the season,” stating that he was uncertain about the direction of the season during its initial development.

He explained that, unlike “1883,” for which he had a complete vision from the start, this time he was embarking on an uncharted adventure.

Sheridan also reached out to the network, explaining that he needed “more episodes to complete this narrative.”

“I required the story to be told over two segments,” he informed the network. “An initial eight-episode arc followed by another eight to properly conclude the story. I can’t do justice to it in just two episodes.”

From Sheridan’s insights, it seems that Season 2 of “1923” may indeed serve as its final installment. Here’s what we currently know regarding the release date and cast for Season 2.

Absolutely. Paramount+ confirmed in February 2023 that the “record-setting drama series” will return for a second season.

Is there a release date for ‘1923’ Season 2?

As of now, Paramount+ has not revealed a release date for the second season. The first season of “1923” debuted in December 2022. Nevertheless, the network has indicated that Season 2 is currently in production.

Filming initially took place in Austin, Texas, and then shifted to Butte, Montana, as reported by NBC Montana in September. Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer Dutton, shared on Instagram last Monday a series of photos captioned “Butte is best,” hinting at ongoing shooting for “1923” in that location.
