The firm aiding Big Lots in its bankruptcy process has identified which locations are likely to continue serving customers.

Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, an asset liquidation company based in Boston, presented a list of 200 sites with leases that Variety Wholesalers plans to take over, according to a court filing made on Monday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

In December, Variety Wholesalers, Inc., located in Henderson, North Carolina, announced plans to acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots locations through an agreement with Gordon Brothers. Variety Wholesalers operates over 400 stores in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions, including chains like Roses Discount Stores, Roses Express, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, and Bargain Town.

At the time of its bankruptcy filing in September 2024, Big Lots was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the U.S. and had started 2024 with 1,392 stores. Currently, Big Lots has 872 stores across the country, as per its official website.

Which Big Lots stores are expected to stay operational?

The Big Lots locations mentioned in the court filing are spread across 14 states, with the highest numbers found in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Other states with listed stores include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and West Virginia.

If anyone wishes to object to Variety Wholesalers’ takeover of any of these 200 stores, they must submit their objections to the court before 4 p.m. on February 18, as stated in the court records.

Although Big Lots, Gordon Brothers, and Variety Wholesalers have not responded to inquiries from YSL News, reports indicate that Variety intends to operate these locations under the Big Lots brand, as confirmed by Gordon Brothers. Additional locations may also be included, according to Fast Company.
