Whoopi Goldberg’s Self-Identification as a ‘Working Person’ Sparks Backlash from Fans of ‘The View’

Whoopi Goldberg’s remark about being ‘a working person’ sparks criticism from ‘The View’ audience

Whoopi Goldberg referred to herself as “a working person” on “The View,” which drew mixed reactions from viewers.

In a discussion during Tuesday’s episode, the hosts talked about U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s popular Instagram post where she engaged her constituents about their voting choices, particularly regarding her as a New York Democrat and President-elect Donald Trump.

“I understand that people are struggling. I also feel that way. I work for a living,” Goldberg stated, addressing co-host Sunny Hostin’s points on how the economy influenced the recent election outcomes.

Hostin emphasized the influence of the ongoing situation in Gaza on voters’ decisions. Goldberg further remarked, “If I had unlimited wealth, I wouldn’t be here, alright? So, I’m a working person.”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out, “People who are just trying to make ends meet realize they had more financial stability five years ago.” The “Sister Act” actress countered that there should be more issues beyond the economy that voters consider.

“My child needs to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed. I know how tough things are,” Goldberg shared.

Goldberg’s comments sparked backlash as viewers took to social media to express their thoughts.

“I can’t stand these rich Hollywood celebrities who act like they know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck,” one commenter expressed on X.

Another user on X criticized Goldberg, saying, “Whoopi Goldberg, or ‘Karen,’ is completely disconnected from reality. Here she is claiming she’s one of us in the working class while having a net worth of $60 million.”

“The whole panel is out of touch with ordinary people. Please stop! It feels patronizing to the average person. Invite some people from lower-income backgrounds on the show and learn a thing or two,” another X user remarked.

Despite the criticism leveled at Goldberg, “The View” has remained highly successful for ABC News recently.

The show has just achieved its highest overall viewership in over three and a half years, broadcasting its most-watched episode in a decade during a post-election recap that examined Vice President Kamala Harris’s performance.
