‘Wicked’ Surpasses Records as the Top-Grossing Film Adaptation of a Broadway Musical
The movie “Wicked” continues to soar at the box office, showcasing its remarkable success.
After running in theaters for over a month, the film has achieved the remarkable feat of being the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical to date.
This record was previously held by “Mamma Mia!” from 2008, which made $611 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. “Wicked” has already surpassed that, bringing in $635 million worldwide, as stated by Box Office Mojo.
The impressive performance of “Wicked” marks a significant achievement for the cinematic adaptations of stage musicals, many of which have faced financial difficulties in recent times.
“In the Heights,” directed by “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu in 2021 and based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical, did not perform well at the box office, likely due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other adaptations like “Cats,” “West Side Story” by Steven Spielberg, and “Dear Evan Hansen” also struggled financially, raising concerns about the future of musical adaptations in theaters.
However, “Wicked” has significantly changed the landscape by becoming one of the standout box office successes of the year. It is currently the sixth highest-grossing film of 2024, and notably, the only film in the top six that is not a sequel. As of Tuesday, the other 2024 films that have outperformed “Wicked” include “Dune: Part Two,” “Moana 2,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Inside Out 2.”
Earlier this year, the movie adaptation of the “Mean Girls” musical did relatively well, grossing over $100 million globally. It was initially planned for a direct streaming release.
Among the musical adaptations “Wicked” has surpassed are “Les Misérables” ($442.8 million), “Grease” ($396 million), and “Chicago” ($306.8 million).
Besides its box office triumphs, “Wicked” is also anticipated to make waves during the awards season. The film has garnered four Golden Globe nominations, including best comedy or musical. Additionally, it was named best movie of the year by the National Board of Review, an accolade often seen as a precursor to an Academy Awards best picture nomination.
While the domestic box office remains lower than pre-pandemic levels, several blockbuster films in 2024 have set new records. Disney’s “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing animated film ever, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has claimed the title of highest-grossing R-rated film, and “Moana 2” experienced the most significant Thanksgiving weekend box office.
Looking ahead to 2025, audiences can expect even more highly anticipated films, including “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Superman,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” along with “Wicked: For Good,” which is set to hit theaters on November 21 and adapts the second half of the Broadway show.
