Will former presidents be present at Trump’s inauguration? Here are their plans.
On Tuesday, former First Lady Michelle Obama shared that she will not be participating in the inauguration ceremony for President-elect Donald Trump.
Historically, former presidents and their families attend inaugurations after their tenure, with the exception of the president who is being inaugurated. Trump notably did not attend President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021 following the events of the January 6 Capitol riot.
The three living former presidents, who are not being inaugurated on January 20, have confirmed their presence, alongside Biden, who will be concluding his presidency.
Here’s a rundown of the living former presidents and their attendance status for President-elect Trump’s inauguration.
President Joe Biden
President Joe Biden stated in December that he will indeed be at the inauguration.
“Of course I am,” Biden expressed during an interview with the Meidas Touch network. “The only president to miss an inauguration is the one who is about to be inaugurated.”
Barack Obama
Former President Barack Obama plans to attend, although his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, has opted out, as confirmed by the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama.
George W. Bush
A spokesperson for George W. Bush has indicated that both he and former First Lady Laura Bush will be present at Trump’s inauguration.
Bill Clinton
According to the Associated Press, both Bill and Hillary Clinton will also attend the inauguration. YSL News has contacted the Clinton Foundation for verification but has not received an immediate reply.
