Will Smith reveals his first album since 2005, signaling a return to music

Will Smith is making a definitive return to music.

On Thursday, the actor known for “Pursuit of Happyness” announced his upcoming album titled “Based on a True Story,” set to launch in March. This marks Smith’s first complete album since his 2005 release, “Lost and Found.”

For almost a year, Smith has been hinting at his musical comeback by dropping several singles featuring well-known artists. The new album will encompass these tracks, including “You Can Make it,” “Work of Art,” and “Tantrum,” which feature collaborations with rappers Russ and Joyner Lucas, as well as Smith’s son, Jaden.

The song “You Can Make It,” featuring Fridayy and Sunday Service Choir, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay Chart in June. Smith’s last stint at the top of the charts was in 1997 with “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.”

The Oscar-winning actor showcased the new song at the 2024 BET Awards, alongside several other live shows and festivals that have set the stage for his musical shift.

In April, Smith performed his Grammy-winning song “Men In Black” alongside J Balvin, while donning the attire of his character from the 1997 film. A month later, he arrived to the “Ride or Die” premiere on a double-decker bus with his co-star Martin Lawrence and treated the audience to a snippet of his 1997 hit “Miami,” celebrating his role as a Miami detective.

He concluded the year with a series of concerts at The Observatory North Park in San Diego.

Accompanying the album announcement, Smith released “Beautiful Scars,” a fresh single featuring hip-hop artist Big Sean, along with a music video.

This introspective track explores both artists’ journeys toward self-awareness, blending rap verses with an auto-tune heavy chorus.

While touching on spiritual themes, Smith’s lyrics are clear and precise— a refreshing contrast to the mumble rap that has gained popularity in recent years.

The upcoming album is expected to maintain this storytelling style as Smith re-establishes his identity not only as the Fresh Prince or the Oscar-winning actor who shocked audiences with his slap to Chris Rock but also as a reputable musical artist.
