A Stunning California Home Built from Wine Barrels with ‘Rustic Charm’ is Up for Sale: Explore Inside

A Central California property on the market is a true paradise for wine enthusiasts.

The “Barrel House,” constructed from two towering reclaimed redwood wine barrels in Big Sur, is currently for sale at a price of $3.265 million.

This home, designed by an architect, is described as a cultural landmark amidst the high-end real estate of Big Sur.

Hillary Lipman, a listing agent from Big Sur Coast Properties, revealed to YSL News on Monday that the owner wishes to retire and move closer to her daughter in San Luis Obispo. Lipman conveyed that the owner looks forward to “passing on this remarkable property.”

The “Barrel House” has been in the family of the current owner for four decades, offering potential buyers a rare chance to own a home designed by the renowned Big Sur architect Mickey Muennig.

Muennig, famously dubbed the “man who built Big Sur,” is best remembered for designing the Post Ranch Inn, a luxury resort perched on the cliffs of Big Sur, according to SF Gate. He was also an advocate for organic architecture, integrating homes into their natural surroundings, SF Gate noted.

The “Barrel House” combines rustic character with seaside scenery and features 2 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and an open loft in over 2,200 square feet of space. Additionally, there’s a guest cottage, among various other amenities, on the five-acre lot.

“This residence is situated among a unique group of houses perched atop the ridge west of Highway 1. This handcrafted home is set in the heart of the Big Sur wilderness while still being just minutes away from local dining, resorts, and other conveniences,” as outlined in the online listing.
