Winter’s Fury: Prepare for More Freezing Rain and Sleet in the Coming Days

Upcoming ice storm signals more freezing rain and sleet for these states

Typically, February ranks as the snowiest month in the northeastern United States, and this year seems to follow that trend, with significant snow expected across much of the region over the next few days.

Beginning with an ice and snow storm on Thursday, numerous winter weather systems are predicted to hit parts of the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions, leading to hazardous travel conditions extending into the middle of next week, according to weather experts.

“February is starting with a very turbulent weather pattern,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno. “A series of three winter storms will deliver snow, ice, and sleet to millions from the Midwest to the Northeast.”

Ice storm warnings issued for Thursday morning

The most severe weather on Thursday is expected in the Appalachians of Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, where an ice storm warning will be active until midday due to anticipated freezing rain.

The National Weather Service noted that “power outages and tree damage are probable with the ice.” Additionally, “travel conditions could become extremely difficult.”

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Marshall Moss cautioned motorists that “freezing rain is the most treacherous form of precipitation to drive on, offering absolutely no traction.” He further explained that “ice patches can be clear, making it hard for drivers to distinguish between icy and merely wet roads.”

As the storm moves northward, regions in northeastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, New York City, and Maine may see snow accumulations of 1-3 inches, while the higher elevations of northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine could receive a plowable 3-6 inches of snow, according to AccuWeather.

Short respite on Friday, followed by another storm over the weekend

After a break on Friday, another storm is predicted to arrive over the weekend. Weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce stated, “Snow and a band of ice are likely to form by Saturday, spanning from the northern Plains and Great Lakes to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.”

According to the weather service, sleet and freezing rain are expected in areas of the Mid-Atlantic, New York, and southern New England, which could pose dangers.

The highest risk for icing on Saturday will be noticed in northern Ohio and parts of southwestern, central, and northern Pennsylvania, as highlighted by AccuWeather.

Dolce mentioned that the Interstate 95 corridor could see an initial burst of snow, particularly around New York City and Philadelphia, before transitioning to a wintry mix and/or rain. “Boston may experience snow for a longer duration, potentially accumulating several inches.”

More winter storms anticipated next week

Long-term forecasting models suggest that this active pattern of winter storms could continue in the Midwest and East next week, Dolce indicated.

“With colder air moving in from the north, there’s potential for snow and/or ice to extend further south than what we are witnessing this week,” he elaborated.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Joe Lundberg added: “From late Monday through Wednesday, a storm is expected to develop in Texas and track toward the Mid-Atlantic coast, bringing a wider area of snow and ice to the north of its path, while the South and Southeast may face heavy rain and severe weather.”
