Medical examiner reveals identities of victims in heartbreaking Wisconsin school shooting
MILWAUKEE — On Wednesday, the medical examiner’s office confirmed the identities of the teacher and student who tragically lost their lives in the shooting at a private school in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office reported the names of the deceased as Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, and Erin West, 42. Both victims died from firearm-related injuries, as indicated by the results of their autopsies.
Rubi was a freshman at Abundant Life Christian School, while Erin was noted to be a substitute coordinator according to the school’s staff directory. Earlier in the day, Rubi’s family had given permission for her obituary to be published by Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care.
According to her obituary, Rubi was an avid book lover with a passion for art, singing, and playing in a family worship band. She had a cherished relationship with her pets, which included a cat named Ginger and a dog named Coco.
The shooting took place around 11 a.m. on Monday when a 15-year-old student opened fire during a study hall, as reported by local authorities.
According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, there is currently no evidence suggesting that the shooter, identified as Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, specifically targeted anyone. He invited anyone with information that may indicate otherwise to reach out to the authorities.
“The shooter made the choice to enter that study hall filled with students and open fire,” Chief Barnes commented. “Everyone present had an equal risk of being harmed that day.”
It remains unclear if the shooter was officially supposed to be in that study hall at the time.
Following the incident, six individuals sustained injuries before the shooter took her own life. The medical examiner’s report confirmed that Rupnow passed away at a local hospital.
Among the six injured, two students are in critical condition with life-threatening wounds. A teacher and three other students were also wounded.
Initially, the individuals were admitted to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. As of Monday evening, two of them had already been discharged.
Barnes noted that the hospital has stopped providing updates to the police regarding the condition of those who are still receiving treatment, citing privacy regulations.
The identities of the injured victims have not been disclosed by authorities. However, Barnes mentioned that, to his knowledge, all of them are still alive.
