WNBA Finals: Predictions from YSL News staff on Liberty vs. Lynx

Could it be that the sixth time is the lucky one?

The 2024 WNBA Finals is set to be the sixth opportunity for the New York Liberty, one of the original teams in the league, to claim the championship title. The players from New York are eager to change their status from contenders to champions.

The Liberty, featuring Breanna Stewart, a constant contender for MVP, have been the top team in the league throughout the year. Stewart has displayed her usual phenomenal abilities, and guard Sabrina Ionescu has shown notable improvement. The addition of rookie Leonie Fiebich has proven to be a smart choice, and solid performances from Jonquel Jones and Betnijah Laney have made New York a formidable opponent for all. Many believe they are likely to become the 2024 champions.

How can the Lynx limit Ionescu, Stewart, and the Liberty?

Limiting a player with the skills of Stewart is quite a challenge, and the same goes for Ionescu. However, Minnesota can aim to make their shots difficult and force them into taking inefficient attempts. Keeping them fatigued can be crucial.

From a player perspective, Jonquel Jones, standing at 6-foot-6, will be a significant factor for New York. The former WNBA MVP is capable of scoring near the basket as well as hitting three-pointers, but she tends to get into foul trouble. If Minnesota can draw fouls on Jones and limit her playing time, it greatly enhances their chances of victory.
