Details on the 2025 Met Gala: Dress Code and Host Committee Announced
The 2025 Met Gala has revealed its dress code, focusing prominently on menswear this year.
In line with the upcoming “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the dress code invites attendees and designers to fashion outfits under the theme “Tailored for You,” as reported by Vogue on Tuesday.
This high-profile gala and its accompanying exhibit aim to generate funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. This year’s exhibit will explore the cultural and historical evolution of the Black dandy, tracing its origins from Enlightenment-era Europe in the 18th century to modern manifestations in global cities, according to the Met.
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibit aims to honor the rich history of Black menswear and reframe the concept of the “dandy” in popular culture.
Traditionally defined as “a man excessively devoted to style,” this concept became linked to Black men in 18th-century Europe as a trend of elegantly dressed servant staff emerged. Over the years, “dandyism” has been redefined to celebrate the evolution and influence of distinctive Black style.
According to a statement from the Met regarding the exhibit, “Dandyism provided Black people a means to use fashion, gestures, irony, and humor to transform their identities and envision new political and social pathways.”
When is the 2025 Met Gala?
The Met Gala, which has been led by Anna Wintour since 1995, is scheduled to take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5.
What is the 2025 Met Gala dress code?
The theme “Tailored for You” aligns with the “Superfine” exhibit, which will be open to the public from May 6 to October 26.
As per Vogue, the dress code is “specifically crafted to inspire creativity and provide guidance.” While some fashion designers might closely adhere to the theme, others may use it as a foundation for their own interpretations.
Who are the co-chairs for Met Gala 2025?
LeBron James will act as the honorary co-chair, alongside Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton who will also co-chair the event. Anna Wintour, recognized as a key figure behind this major fashion event, will return as co-chair as well.
Which celebrities will be attending Met Gala 2025?
Although the list of celebrities set to attend hasn’t been disclosed yet, the host committee was announced today. Notable names include André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Grace Wales Bonner, Simone Biles and her husband Jonathan Owens, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Regina King, Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Olivier Rousteing, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker.
This diverse group consisting of artists, writers, musicians, and other influential figures from the Black community reflects the museum’s efforts to embrace a gala closely tied to Black identity, especially following previous criticisms of insensitivity in themes.
Met Gala 2024 theme and co-chairs
The theme for the 2024 Met Gala was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” also serving as the title for the corresponding exhibit at the Costume Institute. While the gala theme generally differs from the dress code, they are typically related.
Last year’s dress code was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, which led to garden-themed attire among attendees. For the 2024 event, co-chairs included Wintour alongside Latin music icon Bad Bunny, multifaceted artist Jennifer Lopez, “Euphoria” star Zendaya, and “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth.
