What to Enjoy: You’re Welcome! Again!

Happy Black Friday! Or should we say merry Black Friday? Perhaps the Blackest Friday?

No matter how you choose to celebrate the day after Thanksgiving, we hope you’re enjoying it. Here’s the scoop: Whether you’re hitting the shops, enjoying leftovers, or winding down from family gatherings, it’s the perfect occasion to watch something fun. You’ve earned it! Just in time for the extended holiday weekend, a new animated “Moana” has set sail for a musical journey at the theaters. But if you prefer relaxing at home, there’s more than enough streaming options available, especially if you’re a fan of the Beatles. Honestly, we are feeling a bit envious since “Wicked” continues to dominate pop culture, and there’s so much more to explore with what could be this season’s biggest blockbuster.

Now let’s dive into the highlights:

Join Auliʻi Cravalho and musical duo Barlow & Bear in ‘Moana 2’

The original “Moana” is a beloved favorite of mine due to its inspiring take on the Disney princess narrative, along with the fantastic songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. (It holds a special place in my heart as it was the first film my daughter watched in theaters!) The sequel brings back that same charm: while it may not quite capture the fresh energy of the first film, the duo of Auliʻi Cravalho’s Moana and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui are still delightful to watch. (Check out my ★★★ review.)

Interesting tidbit: I interviewed Cravalho when she was just 15 years old for a preview of the original “Moana.” We recently reconnected when she visited our NYC studio, where she shared insights about her current role in “Cabaret” on Broadway as Sally Bowles. “I’ve expressed a strong desire to take on roles outside of the high school scene, and playing Sally lets me dive into madness every night,” she remarked.

In “Moana,” Cravalho also performs some new tracks – she mentioned that “Beyond” is an “absolute banger,” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” “stays on my mind” – and my colleague Nicole Fallert spoke with Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear about creating songs for the sequel and consulting Miranda for a crash course in musical theater.

Watch Disney+ documentary ‘Beatles ’64,’ Ben Stiller’s ‘Nutcrackers,’ and more

My editor Kim Willis, an avid Beatles enthusiast, was the ideal person to interview director David Tedeschi about the new Disney+ documentary “Beatles ’64.” The film chronicles the British band’s tumultuous first visit to the USA and their iconic performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Tedeschi noted that their concert two days later in front of 8,000 screaming fans at Washington Coliseum – their inaugural concert in America – was “a revelation.” He described the footage as “grabbing me by the neck and pulling me into 1964, giving me a true sense of what The Beatles were like as a live act.”

“Beatles ’64” is just one of several new titles available for streaming. I’ve compiled a viewing list for your weekend that includes “Alien: Romulus,” “My Old Ass,” “The Piano Lesson,” “Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary” (trust me, it’s fantastic), and “Nutcrackers.” (Ben Stiller stars in the latter festive film, and my friend Marco della Cava interviewed him about his co-stars and his love for movies that really capture the holiday spirit.)

Check out Jonathan Bailey and Marissa Bode in the blockbuster ‘Wicked’

No doubt about it; “Wicked” is a hit. While leads Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are making headlines and generating Oscar buzz, there are also impressive supporting performances to recognize. Our resident “Wicked” expert Patrick Ryan interviewed “Bridgerton” breakout star Jonathan Bailey about portraying the “confident and curious” Prince Fiyero. Bailey humorously mentioned his hope for a Lego set featuring him as a mini-figure. “Christmas is approaching, and I trust I’ve been good this year,” Bailey added. (He is set to star in “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” meaning there may soon be another Lego Jonathan on the way.)

Recently, Patrick spoke with Marissa Bode, who portrays Elphaba’s sister Nessarose. Notably, she is the first wheelchair user to take on this significant role in the musical’s 21-year history. At just 24 years old, Marissa began her acting career at the age of 8. However, everything changed when she was involved in a severe car accident on her way to a rehearsal about three years later. Reflecting on people’s reactions, Bode shared, “It seemed odd to me that many would say, ‘Oh, she never gave up!’ My perspective was simply, ‘Well, why would I?’”
