Alexander Zverev calls out crowd for booing after Novak Djokovic exits due to injury
Alexander Zverev is set to compete in the Australian Open final following Novak Djokovic’s retirement from their semifinal match due to an injury.
Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open ten times, faced a mixed response from the audience as he left the court after withdrawing after losing the first set, which Zverev won 7-6 in a tiebreak (7-5).
In his post-match interview, Zverev expressed his disapproval of the crowd’s reaction, saying, “Please, guys, don’t boo a player when he goes out with injury.” He received applause for his sentiments. He acknowledged that fans expect an exciting match but emphasized the dedication Djokovic has shown to the sport over the past two decades.
“He has triumphed in this tournament even with an abdominal tear and a hamstring tear so if he can’t continue playing, it genuinely means he can’t continue,” Zverev explained. “Therefore, please show some respect and love for Novak as well.”
Zverev will compete against either top seed Jannik Sinner or American Ben Shelton in the final.
Djokovic later revealed to reporters that he is dealing with a muscle tear that began to hinder him in the later part of the first set.
