Which cruise line is ideal for adults? Key insights on 18+ voyages.
Cruises often feature numerous swimming pools, entertainment options, and child care services, making them a popular choice for family vacations.
However, some travelers seek a child-free escape. This is where adults-only cruises come into play. Many cruise lines and vessels exclusively welcome guests aged 18 and over, appealing to parents needing some personal time and those preferring a quiet getaway.
It’s essential to note that not all cruise operators are alike. Certain family-friendly ships may have designated adult areas, providing a blend of family and adult-focused experiences.
Here’s a guide to adults-only options at sea.
What is the premier cruise line for adults?
According to Sheri Griffiths, the founder of CruiseTipsTV, there are primarily two cruise lines in the U.S. that focus exclusively on adults 18 and older: Virgin Voyages and Viking.
The U.K. company, Saga Cruises, targets an older audience with a minimum age requirement of 50 (passengers may bring a companion over 40). Additionally, P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corp. and based in the UK, has two of its seven ships designated for adults only.
Some cruise lines, while welcoming children, are less geared toward families. Griffiths mentioned lines such as Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line, noting that the number of families can greatly vary according to the destination and sailing dates.
“For example, Alaska is a family-oriented destination. Even on these premium lines, you’re likely to see many families during the summer months,” she noted. “However, on longer itineraries (over seven days), it’s common to encounter very few children on Celebrity and Holland America sailings.”
Some Princess Cruises ships may also have similar dynamics, according to Griffiths, though she emphasized that they are outstanding in terms of children’s and teens’ programming.
Are there adult-only areas on cruise ships?
Absolutely. Many ships, even those known for family activities, often have sections reserved exclusively for adults. Notable examples include Royal Caribbean International’s Solarium, featuring hot tubs, lounges, and more, as well as Carnival Cruise Line’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.
“This can be particularly beneficial on family-oriented ships like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, which may have numerous children onboard, giving you the option to find a tranquil space,” Griffiths explained.
