GOP Senator Joni Ernst Hesitant to Back Pete Hegseth for Trump’s Defense Secretary Post

Pivotal GOP Senator Joni Ernst indicates indecision on backing Pete Hegseth for Trump’s defense secretary

WASHINGTON – Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, who plays a key role in deciding whether Pete Hegseth will be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of Defense, stated on Thursday that she has not yet made a decision regarding her support for the controversial nominee.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Ernst is responsible for participating in the initial voting process on Hegseth’s nomination.

“I value the service Hegseth has provided to the country. As a combat veteran myself, we’ve covered many pertinent issues, and the vetting process will continue,” Ernst conveyed during an appearance on Fox News Thursday morning, referring to their recent meeting. “Our discussion was open and constructive, and I expect more discussions in the months ahead.”

However, when Fox News hosts emphasized that Ernst didn’t seem ready to endorse Hegseth, she agreed, responding: “I think you are correct.”

“Many of our senators want to ensure all allegations have been addressed, which is why a thorough vetting process is vital,” Ernst added.

Since Republicans will possess a 53-47 majority in the Senate next year, Hegseth could lose the backing of just three Republican senators and still secure confirmation if Democrats stand united against him, as anticipated.

Reports suggest that Ernst is on Trump’s list of potential individuals to replace Hegseth as a defense nominee.

Hegseth is currently facing accusations of sexual assault and claims that he was under the influence while serving as leader of the nonprofit Concerned Veterans for America, concerns that could hinder his confirmation prospects. Ernst has publicly shared her experiences as a survivor of sexual assault and domestic abuse.

Hegseth, a former Army National Guard member, has denied these allegations and expressed his intention to persist with the nomination process as long as he has Trump’s support.

Senator Mike Rounds, a Republican from South Dakota and fellow member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told CNN on Thursday that he believes Hegseth still has a viable route to Senate confirmation.

When later asked by reporters what factors might influence her decision to back Hegseth, Ernst refrained from providing specifics.
