Melissa Joan Hart discusses her son’s choice to skip college: ‘It’s been a challenge’

Melissa Joan Hart has a busy home and is enjoying it thoroughly.

The former teen sensation shared her thoughts with People in an interview released on Wednesday regarding her oldest son’s choice to forgo college.

Mason, aged 18, has decided to pursue a career in aviation, consequently opting to stay at home while many of his peers embark on their college journeys. Although Hart values their newfound quality time together, she admitted to experiencing some initial societal pressure regarding his choice.

“It’s been a challenge,” Hart, known for her role in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” revealed to People, “There is a lot of pressure surrounding what is expected.”

“It feels a bit odd not to follow the usual path,” she further commented, “However, I believe that many young people today are exploring diverse avenues, and that’s perfectly acceptable.”

Choosing aviation is just one of many options that don’t necessitate a traditional four-year college degree. The growing appeal of trade schools among younger people is largely due to the steep costs of conventional college education. Moreover, as artificial intelligence increasingly affects various industries, some students perceive hands-on jobs taught in trade schools as being less susceptible to automation.

According to the Education Data Initiative, approximately 62% of high school (or equivalent) graduates pursue some form of postsecondary education, which can encompass trade schools or four-year universities.

“Now I see it as a true blessing. At first, it felt odd to deviate from the traditional path,” Hart shared with People. “All the kids were going off to college, decorating dorm rooms, or returning home for the holidays.”

These days, Hart, also a mother to Braydon, 16, and Tucker, 12, feels grateful for the additional time she has with her oldest son. Having him join the family for dinner nightly and being able to take him to his younger brother’s dance recitals is considered a true gift by the actress.

Hart herself navigated an unconventional college experience, revealing to Today.com in May that she “worked hard” to attend university while starring in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” although she ultimately didn’t earn enough credits for graduation.

Regardless, she cherishes the moments spent at New York University and remains optimistic that her son might reconsider his choice regarding college.

“I still hold out hope that he will attend, but if he decides not to, that’s fine too.”
