“During the holiday festivities, it’s crucial to pay attention to both your drink selection and quantity,” advises Jessica Wilson, MS, RD, and founder of The Helpful Dietitian, in her remarks to YSL News. “Enjoying a glass of eggnog on Christmas Eve probably won’t hinder your health goals. However, if you’re indulging regularly, several times a week or every night, the type of alcohol matters more because of calorie and sugar amounts.”

Which Alcohol Is Lowest in Calories?
If you prefer lower-calorie drinks, Wilson suggests opting for low-calorie beers or wines, as standard beers and wines can typically range between 150 to 200 calories, depending on the brand. Most spirits usually have slightly under 100 calories per shot, as stated by the USDA food database.
“Combining liquor shots with low-calorie mixers, like soda water with lime, low-sugar juices, or calorie-free sodas, can help you keep your calorie consumption low while still enjoying festive drinks,” she adds.
If you want to minimize calories, a vodka soda might be a great option.
What Alcohol Is the Healthiest Choice?
The term “healthiest” varies according to individual needs. Some studies suggest that moderate wine consumption may correlate with a lower risk of heart disease, yet health experts wouldn’t categorize any type of alcohol as purely healthy.
“What’s considered the healthiest option can depend on personal factors such as your health goals, dietary restrictions, and budget,” registered dietitian Miranda Galati previously stated to YSL News. “While making nutrient-dense choices is excellent, sometimes opting for a more convenient, processed choice isn’t negative. As a dietitian who encourages sustainable healthy lifestyles, I suggest moving away from the idea that there exists a single healthiest option.”
However, the quest for the “healthiest” choice may not be the most beneficial approach during holiday gatherings or even in daily life. Wilson recommends bringing or selecting more nutritious food options at holiday events to strike a balance between nourishing your body and savoring festive snacks and beverages.
“The holidays celebrate joy, togetherness, and traditions, many of which include delicious food,” Wilson emphasizes.
