Man Risks Imprisonment After Raid on Nonrefundable Cans

Man risks jail for transporting cans for refund

A man who was pulled over while driving a truck loaded with empty cans faces a possible five-year prison sentence due to a case involving a potential $1,000 reward.

Authorities stopped Brian Edward Everidge from Columbiaville, Mich., after noticing he was driving a rented box truck 12 miles per hour over the speed limit. Upon checking the vehicle, the state trooper found it was “stuffed” with trash bags of cans, as reported by The Livingston Daily.

Everidge confessed to collecting the cans in Lexington, Kentucky, which is approximately 360 miles south of his stop, with plans to take them back for a refund, according to The Livingston Daily.

In Michigan, the deposit for beverage containers is the highest in the country at 10 cents each, suggesting Everidge’s collection could be valued at over $1,000.

However, Everidge is in trouble because it is illegal to return cans or bottles in Michigan that were bought out of state.

As noted by The New York Daily News, this situation resembles a storyline from “Seinfeld,” where Kramer abandoned a similar scheme—not for legal reasons but due to concerns about return on investment.
