Today’s Bowl Game Schedule: An Overview of the Two Matches on January 3

The celebrations have wound down, “Auld Lang Syne” has been sung nationwide, and 2025 is here. However, the college football bowl season isn’t finished yet. After the major playoff games on New Year’s Day, there’s still a chance for some teams to shine over the next few days.

Two games are on the agenda for this Friday: one honors public service, while the other whimsically focuses on Condiments. Sadly, no edible mascots this time, but let’s take a look at the teams participating.

First Responder Bowl – North Texas vs. Texas State

Time/TV/location: 4 p.m. ET, ESPN, Dallas.

Why tune in: This matchup highlights a Texas-based group-of-five contest. Unfortunately for North Texas, they’ll play without key transfers like starting QB Chandler Morris and leading WR DT Sheffield. Drew Mestemaker is set to make his first start as QB for the Mean Green and will likely lean on his experienced WR, Damon Ward. Texas State has also lost some players but still has QB Jordan McCloud, who will target WRs Joey Hobert and Jaden Williams.

Why it may fall flat: Fans of the Mean Green are hoping their new players rise to the occasion right away, though it’s quite possible the experienced Bobcats will handle this game comfortably.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl – Minnesota vs. Virginia Tech

Time/TV/location: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Charlotte, NC.

Why tune in: This evening game showcases teams from major conferences and will end with a famously messy postgame ritual. Virginia Tech has a chance to redeem themselves after a disappointing postseason for the ACC, while Minnesota is in better shape to compete. The trio of playmakers for Minnesota—QB Max Brosmer, WR Daniel Jackson, and RB Darius Taylor—are expected to participate. On the other hand, Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones has been struggling with injuries and is doubtful, but backup William “Pop” Watson, who had significant involvement late last season, will return next year.

Why it might disappoint: Given the achievements of both teams, the Gophers seem to have a distinct edge. Nonetheless, the Hokies have been in some close games this season, so there’s a chance this matchup could be more competitive than anticipated.
