Justin Verlander Signs One-Year Contract with San Francisco Giants

As he turns 42, Justin Verlander will find himself in a new environment—attending a Cactus League training camp for a team relying on his extensive experience to support a youthful pitching roster.

Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who aims to pitch until he’s 45 and achieve at least 300 career wins, is embarking on this journey with the San Francisco Giants after finalizing a one-year contract on Tuesday night.

ESPN was the first to report that Verlander’s new deal with the Giants is valued at $15 million.

This marks Verlander’s inaugural experience with a West Coast team. He won his first Cy Young Award as a member of the Detroit Tigers in 2011 and secured two more with the Houston Astros in 2019 and 2022. Prior to the 2023 season, he signed a two-year, $86.6 million agreement with the New York Mets but was later traded back to Houston.

As he begins this new chapter, Verlander holds a record of 262 wins, but he won’t carry the title of ace on the Giants’ roster.

The ace distinction belongs to Logan Webb, who made his All-Star debut last season after pitching 204 2/3 innings. Verlander will step in behind him, alongside returning veterans Robbie Ray (also a previous AL Cy Young winner) and Jordan Hicks, aiming to provide valuable innings and leadership to a pitching staff that includes younger talents like lefty Kyle Harrison and righty Hayden Birdsong.

However, the Giants understand they might not be getting the prime version of Verlander.

Last season saw him pitch to a 5.48 ERA while facing two separate stints on the injured list, including a significant two-month absence due to a neck issue. Still, in 2023, he managed to log 162 1/3 innings with a respectable 3.49 ERA. Earlier, he had earned the AL Cy Young award with Houston in a year where he missed the entire 2021 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The Giants likely won’t anticipate extraordinary results, but they will gladly embrace Verlander’s larger goal: striving for 300 wins and continued longevity on the mound.
