James Woods Shares Emotional Experience of Evacuating the Pacific Palisades Blaze: “It Felt Like a Hellfire”

James Woods recounts emotional evacuation during Pacific Palisades fire: ‘It felt like an inferno’

James Woods has made it through the worst of the Pacific Palisades fire, but he is still grappling with the impact of the disaster in Los Angeles.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who previously shared on social media about having to flee his home during the fire, described the terrifying evacuation in an interview with CNN’s Pamela Brown on Wednesday.

Woods explained that he and his family were right at the “center of the fire as it ignited” and had to evacuate with only “the clothes on our backs.”

Severe Santa Ana winds have ignited multiple wildfires across Los Angeles County since Tuesday, resulting in at least five fatalities and numerous homes being destroyed. Although wind conditions were expected to improve overnight Wednesday, weather experts warned that dangerous conditions would persist at least through Thursday.

Fueled by a powerful wind storm hitting LA County, a brush fire spread over more than 1,200 acres on Tuesday in the Pacific Palisades area, leading to the evacuation of thousands of homes. By Wednesday, the Palisades Fire continued to devastate properties, burning 15,832 acres between the coastal towns of Santa Monica and Malibu.

“It was chaos. It felt like an inferno,” Woods shared with Brown. “Every house around us was burning.”

Woods reflected: “One day you’re enjoying the pool and the next everything is gone.”

Woods isn’t alone among celebrities living in the Pacific Palisades, a upscale neighborhood located about 20 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles.

This fire in the Pacific Palisades has also caused various disruptions in Hollywood this week, including the postponement of the Critics’ Choice Awards and the cancellation of several movie premieres.

On Tuesday, Woods noted in a post on X that he managed to “evacuate safely” but expressed sorrow over the widespread destruction, stating, “I am unsure if our house is still standing, but sadly, many homes on our street are not.”
