Park City Mountain Resort Ski Patrollers Strike: What Visitors Need to Know

Park City Mountain Resort ski patrols are currently on strike. Here’s what visitors can anticipate.

The ski patrollers at Park City Mountain Resort have entered their second week of a strike as they negotiate a new contract with Vail Resorts, the mountain’s owner.

According to the patrollers, the main issue is a demand for higher wages. However, the mountain’s management claims that they are dedicated to finding a solution after discussing various other aspects of the contract.

In the meantime, limited staffing among ski patrol has made it difficult for the resort to maintain open trails.

What can visitors expect at Park City during the strike?

Currently, the resort is facing challenges in opening ski terrain amid the strike. On Tuesday, the resort’s website indicated that only 104 out of 350 trails were open, despite having received four inches of new snow in the past two days and more than two feet over the previous week.

However, with fewer visitors on weekdays, a spokesperson for the resort informed YSL News that lift lines were less busy compared to what skiers and snowboarders experienced over the weekend.

On Tuesday morning, average wait times for most lifts were just 5-10 minutes, the spokesperson reported.

Nevertheless, the resort’s executives admitted that it is uncertain how many trails can be kept open each day.

“We’re working to open the terrain that we can safely handle each day of the strike with our available staff. We aim to be transparent about our operations,” stated Deirdra Walsh, Chief Operating Officer of Park City Mountain. “Every day presents new challenges, and we are doing our best to keep our guests updated.”

What are the ski patrol’s demands in negotiations?

The ski patrollers are aiming for a $2 increase to their base pay in the upcoming contract.

“In winter, our members typically work 10-hour shifts, 4-5 days a week, and can work 12+ hours if it snows and we need to come in early for avalanche management. Even with overtime, it’s a struggle to make ends meet,” the union stated on Facebook. “In these negotiations, we’re advocating for a sustainable, long-term career path. We’re not just looking to survive — we want to thrive. Receiving a livable wage is crucial for ensuring we return each year with our expertise.”

The management of the mountain reported that discussions are continuing and that progress is being made.

“We have made advancements over the many months of negotiations with the patrol, agreeing on 24 out of 27 items the union proposed,” Walsh commented. “We are committed to reaching a resolution that reflects our respect for their contributions.”

When will the strike come to an end?

There is currently no specified end date for the strike.
