Trump Prepares for Historic Meeting with Putin as President-elect

President-elect Trump indicates he’s prepared to meet Putin from Russia, meeting in progress

In a statement made late Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he is prepared to engage in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that arrangements for this meeting are currently underway, although he did not provide a specific date for when it would occur.

Trump remarked, “He wants to meet, and we are coordinating it,” speaking to a journalist at a press event held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

He further commented, “He has publicly expressed his desire to meet, and it is imperative that we resolve this war, which is a dire situation,” referring to Putin’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine—a conflict Trump has promised to bring to a swift conclusion upon entering office this month.

The Kremlin responded on Friday, stating they are receptive to the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Putin, but indicated that no arrangements have been finalized yet.

“If, after Trump takes office, there is a political willingness to renew high-level communications, then President Putin will certainly welcome this,” Peskov stated during a press conference, according to state media.

As of now, there hasn’t been any immediate response from the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Since the onset of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, President Joe Biden has committed substantial financial and military support to Ukraine. The prospect of Trump returning to the presidency has raised hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the nearly three-year-long conflict, along with concerns that any potential peace agreement could come at a significant cost to Ukraine.

Trump has voiced doubts regarding the continuation of U.S. security aid for Ukraine, and some of his advisors, including Keith Kellogg—who has been nominated as his special envoy to Ukraine and Russia—have suggested proposals to end the war that might require Ukraine to give up substantial territories to Russia.

Trump has frequently highlighted his positive rapport with Putin and how it could facilitate ending the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.” However, he recently suggested that a more realistic timeframe might be around six months.

“I hope to achieve that in six months,” Trump stated to reporters on Tuesday. “I aspire to accomplish it well before the six-month mark.”

During his first term, Trump and Putin held at least five meetings at various international summits.
