Oscar Nominations Delayed in Wake of Devastating Los Angeles Fires: New Announcement Date Unveiled

Oscar nominations postponed due to severe LA wildfires: When will nominees be announced?

The Academy Awards have delayed several key dates because of the destructive wildfires occurring in Los Angeles.

These wildfires, which started on January 7, have tragically taken at least 24 lives and have damaged thousands of buildings across the LA area, impacting well-known landmarks and the residences of various celebrities. As a result, the announcement for this year’s Oscar nominations has been postponed to January 23, moving from its original date of January 17. This announcement will be made online without any media presence at the venue.

The voting period for nominations has also been extended to January 17, up from the initial deadline of January 12. The annual Oscar nominees luncheon, a traditional gathering for actors, filmmakers, and crew members for a group photograph, has been entirely canceled.

Moreover, the Scientific and Technical Awards, which recognize advancements in filmmaking, will no longer occur on February 18 and will be rescheduled for a date that is yet to be determined.

“We are deeply saddened by the destruction from the fires and the immense losses faced by many in our community,” said Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, and President Janet Yang in a joint statement on Monday. “The Academy has always been a source of unity in the film industry, and we are committed to helping one another during these challenging times.

“Considering the ongoing situation with the fires in the Los Angeles area, we find it necessary to extend our voting schedule and reschedule the announcement of our nominations to give our members more time.”

The leaders of the Academy expressed their desire to “come together as a community” and use the awards as a means “to honor the strength and kindness of our industry. We are eager to recognize the frontline workers who have fought against the fires, acknowledge those affected, and encourage people to support relief efforts with the Academy. Together, we will navigate through this and foster healing within our global film community.”

When will the Oscars take place?

As of Monday, the Oscars ceremony is still set for March 2.

Where will the Oscars be held?

The event is planned for the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, which was evacuated last week due to the Sunset Fire, although that fire is now contained.

Who will be hosting the Oscars?

Conan O’Brien will host the show, which will be broadcast live on ABC and available for streaming on Hulu (7 p.m. EST/4 PST).
