Kim Kardashian pushes for increased pay for inmate firefighters: ‘I see them as heroes’

Kim Kardashian is advocating for better wages for inmate firefighters.

The 44-year-old reality TV personality shared her thoughts on Instagram this Saturday, praising the inmates who have been combating the severe wildfires in Southern California.

Kardashian pointed out that “there are hundreds of incarcerated firefighters putting their lives on the line to assist us,” yet she believes they are not receiving the adequate pay they earn for their work.

“They earn nearly nothing, risk their lives, and some have even lost their lives, to show their dedication to the community and prove they are now first responders,” she remarks. “I regard them as heroes.”

According to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) released on Friday, over 900 incarcerated firefighters have been actively participating in efforts throughout California, working hard to create fire lines and clear hazardous materials from around buildings to stop the fires from spreading.

Inmate firefighters earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day depending on their experience, along with an additional $1 per hour during emergencies, CDCR reports. For perspective, California’s minimum wage is currently set at $16.50 per hour.

“During emergencies, crews may work for 24 hours straight followed by 24 hours off,” the department notes. “For example, during an emergency, a firefighter at the lowest skill level would earn $26.90 for one day of work. They also receive compensation during their rest periods.”

In addition, firefighter inmates can reduce their sentences by two days for every day they work.

In her post, Kardashian, who has been a long-time advocate for reforming the criminal justice system, directly called on California Governor Gavin Newsom. She encouraged him to “achieve what no governor has done in the past 40 years and raise the pay for incarcerated firefighters to a level that respects those who risk their lives for our safety and our homes.”

Previously, the reality star had indicated her plan to support the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation during this crisis. She also shared that her clothing line, Skims, would be making a substantial donation of underwear, clothing, and socks to Baby2Baby to help those impacted by the fires.
