Auburn Takes the Top Spot in YSL News Sports Men’s College Basketball Poll After Tennessee’s Drop
For the first time in over a month, the YSL News Sports men’s basketball coaches poll has a new leader. This shift brings a mix of good and bad news for the newly ranked No. 1 team.
Auburn ascends to the top position after narrowly avoiding an upset against South Carolina over the weekend. The Tigers earned 25 out of 31 first-place votes this week and have regained the top ranking for the first time since January 2022. However, their star forward, Johni Broome, may face a period of absence due to an ankle injury. This marks Auburn’s first week at No. 1 since January 31, 2022.
The other teams in the top five have also shifted, with former No. 1 Tennessee falling after a significant defeat to Florida. Iowa State climbs to No. 2 following an impressive overtime victory at Texas Tech, marking their highest ranking since December 14, 2015, with five first-place votes. Duke rises to No. 3, while Florida jumps four spots to No. 4 thanks to their strong performance against Tennessee. Alabama remains steady at No. 5. Despite a narrow victory over Texas on Saturday, Tennessee drops to No. 6 but retains one first-place vote.
Marquette keeps their position but drops down to No. 7. Houston climbs three spots back into the top 10 at No. 8. Kentucky, with a 1-1 record this week, slips two spots to No. 9, while Kansas returns to the top 10, moving up two places past No. 11 Texas A&M.
Michigan was the week’s standout performer, jumping five spots to No. 19. Georgia makes its first appearance in the poll at No. 23, its first Top 25 ranking since March 11, 2003. Baylor also returns to the rankings at No. 24. Meanwhile, Oklahoma and UCLA have fallen off the list.
