Jimmy Kimmel gets emotional discussing ‘awful’ Los Angeles fires as late-night show makes its return
Jimmy Kimmel had an emotional return to his late-night program, as it was his first show since the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles.
During his Monday night monologue, Kimmel became visibly emotional while reflecting on a week that he described as “very frightening, very stressful, and quite strange.” His show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” which is filmed in Hollywood, halted production last week due to the fires.
Kimmel shared that the staff had to evacuate their studio the previous Wednesday, displaying footage of the fire dangerously close to their location.
“Many of us were forced to leave our homes quickly,” Kimmel noted. “Some of our colleagues have lost their houses.”
“It’s been horrific. Anyone living in this city likely knows someone—many of us know several—families, friends, or neighbors whose homes have been destroyed. And honestly, we are uncertain if this ordeal is truly over.”
He further mentioned that it’s been a “sickening, shocking, and awful experience,” but also described it as a “beautiful experience,” as the crisis has highlighted how “people have come together to help one another.”
Kimmel announced that he is setting up a donation center in the backlot of his studio where items like bottled water and non-perishable food can be collected to aid those affected by the fires.
“We will ensure essential items are swiftly distributed to those in need,” he stated on Instagram.
In his monologue, Kimmel humorously mentioned that he was hosting “19 people and four dogs” in his home while many were being evacuated, saying, “It’s such a surreal experience to look around your house and decide what to take with you, while also negotiating with your kids about their choices.”
He joked that he now feels like a fire safety expert, even though “before all this happened, most of my knowledge of fire safety came from watching ‘Paw Patrol.'”
Monday’s episode featured Snoop Dogg as a guest, whom Kimmel mentioned he invited partly because he “strongly represents Los Angeles.” Snoop Dogg shared that while he and his family were safe, he knew many people he considered family who “lost everything” in the fires.
“We did what we do,” Snoop Dogg said. “We come together, bring our resources, and ensure we support those who need help.”
