TikTok CEO Set to Attend Trump Inauguration Amid Sale Deadline
Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, is scheduled to attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday. This comes as TikTok faces a pressing challenge in light of a new law that requires the company to either be sold to a firm outside of China or cease operations in the United States by a certain deadline, according to an insider familiar with the inauguration plans.
TikTok, which is a subsidiary of the Chinese company ByteDance, is in a precarious situation in the U.S. due to recent legislation that bans it unless a sale is finalized. The move was justified by lawmakers as a matter of national security, with fears revolving around potential access by Chinese officials to the data of TikTok users.
While Trump previously criticized TikTok and attempted to impose a ban during his first term, he has since warmed up to the platform, expressing a desire to “save” it and stating that he has a “soft spot” for the app.
Chew’s presence at the inauguration is seen as an indication of Trump’s favorable stance towards TikTok. He is anticipated to be seated alongside other distinguished guests, such as celebrities and prominent leaders from various sectors. The New York Times was the first to report on Chew’s attendance at the inauguration.
According to reports, Trump is contemplating an executive order that would permit TikTok to continue its operations for an additional 60 to 90 days past the January 19 deadline for the sale.
In the U.S., TikTok enjoys immense popularity, boasting 170 million American users. Trump’s campaign famously incorporated TikTok into its vigorous social media strategy.
When asked for comments regarding the TikTok CEO’s attendance at the inauguration and Trump’s potential executive order, transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated, “President Trump has consistently shown his intent to save TikTok, and there’s no better deal maker than Donald Trump.”
TikTok has not yet responded to requests for additional comments.
