Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh to undergo heart procedure this offseason
Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, has announced that he will be having two medical procedures this offseason.
When asked during the Chargers’ end-of-season press conference, Harbaugh confirmed, “Yes, I’m having an ablation on my heart.”
During the Chargers’ Week 6 matchup in Denver, Harbaugh had to briefly leave the game after experiencing atrial flutter, a condition where the heart beats at an unusually rapid pace. He was escorted to the locker room by the medical staff early in the first quarter during Los Angeles’ first offensive drive. Doctors treated him in the locker room, and his heart rhythm returned to normal. He rejoined the game with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.
In his absence, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter served as the interim head coach.
At 61, Harbaugh has faced episodes of atrial flutter previously, including a notable incident in 2012 while he was coaching the San Francisco 49ers.
In addition, Harbaugh announced that he is scheduled to have hip surgery this offseason as well.
“I’ll also be getting a hip replacement,” Harbaugh added.
Throughout the season, the Chargers head coach was seen limping noticeably.
The Chargers concluded their season with a 32-12 defeat to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Under Harbaugh’s leadership, the Chargers ended the regular season with an 11-6 record.
