Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers Take Aim at Democrats’ ‘Embrace’ of Trump at Inauguration

Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers Critique Democrats’ ‘Friendly Gesture’ Towards Trump During Inauguration

President Donald Trump has been officially inaugurated for a second term, and late-night hosts are taking a closer look at this significant Inauguration Day.

Late-night comedians reacted to Trump’s inauguration on Monday, with many expressing astonishment at how former President Joe Biden remained friendly with Trump despite having previously labeled him a threat to democracy.

On “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart made fun of Biden for having tea with Trump at the White House on inauguration morning, quipping, “It’s always vital to maintain the tea tradition when you give over the reins to. I’m sorry, what did you call him? Hitler?”

“I’m not suggesting Biden should have staged his own insurrection, but surely there’s a middle ground between storming the Capitol and asking, ‘Would you like a crumpet?'” Stewart commented.

Stewart humorously noted that Democrats who “cautioned Americans to steer clear of this potential fascist dictator” were also present at the inauguration, imagining them saying, “Look at me, ma! Oh, let’s go see Hitler and snap a quick selfie first!”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, however, chose to avoid the event, so Stewart remarked that only she “seemed to maintain the consistent ethical stance of saying, ‘When they go low, I stay the (expletive) home.'”

Regarding Trump’s remarks, Stewart joked that the president’s speech “followed the American tradition of a passive-aggressive power transfer,” as Trump criticized the Biden administration while Biden sat behind him.

Seth Meyers Criticizes Democrats for ‘Hanging Out’ with Trump at Inauguration

In a segment called “Closer Look,” Seth Meyers pointed out that when Trump’s swearing-in was moved indoors due to cold weather, his supporters were “left outside in the cold while Trump gave cozy, VIP seating to wealthy tech elites.”

“Do I really need to explain the metaphor here?” the comedian questioned.

A number of billionaires, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, were present at the inauguration.

Echoing Stewart’s thoughts, Meyers expressed it was “even stranger to see Democrats, who rightly branded Trump as an existential danger to democracy, mingling with him.”

Meyers characterized the Democrats’ “warm embrace of Trump, particularly from Joe Biden,” as “absurd,” asserting it would yield them “nothing” in return.

He specifically criticized Biden for welcoming Trump with “welcome home” when he arrived at the White House, joking that the ex-president was “being welcomed back like an 18-year-old returning home after their first semester at college.”

Meyers labeled Trump’s inaugural speech as an “unsettling, low-energy cocktail of ominous fascism and bizarre topics that “only Donald Trump and his supporters seem to care about.” He remarked that Trump painted a “disturbing picture of an authoritarian regime,” suggesting the inauguration revealed that his priorities lay with the affluent rather than average Americans.

Meyers contended that instead of cozying up to Trump, Democrats should be gearing up to challenge him.

Jimmy Kimmel Critiques Trump’s Inaugural Speech: Lacks ‘Uplifting’ Tone and ‘Quality’

“Our lengthy national nightmare has officially been sworn in again,” Jimmy Kimmel informed viewers on Monday, likening Trump’s inaugural address to Emperor Palpatine’s speech launching the Galactic Empire in “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.”

Kimmel remarked, “It was neither uplifting nor well-written,” adding that Trump “didn’t seem to be enjoying himself” and appeared “very restrained as he read from the teleprompter.”

Commenting on the presence of several tech billionaires at the inauguration, Kimmel concluded that Trump is “selling the country to the highest bidder.”

Stephen Colbert Cracks Jokes About Trump Not Placing Hand on Bible

In his monologue, Stephen Colbert joked about Trump’s absence of a hand on the Bible during his swearing-in, implying that the president would have spontaneously combusted if he had done so.

“When the ceremony was meant to be outside, he was going to place his hand on the Bible, but when they moved it indoors, the fire marshal wouldn’t permit it,” he quipped.

Overall, Colbert described Trump’s speech as “outright strange,” a “predictable mix of familiar gripes and grim tidings.”

Jimmy Fallon Compares Trump’s Second Term to ‘Squid Game’

On “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon joked that “America is gambling on the second Trump presidency,” like “we somehow made it through the first Squid Game and decided to sign up for a sequel.”

Fallon also poked fun at First Lady Melania Trump’s inauguration attire, starting his monologue by wearing a wide-brimmed hat similar to hers and announcing, “After this, we’ll play who wore it better: Me, Melania, or the Hamburglar.”

He added, “People weren’t sure if she was at the inauguration or on a mission to take down Indiana Jones.”
