Trump Suggests Elon Musk or Larry Ellison as Potential TikTok Buyers

Donald Trump Open to Elon Musk or Larry Ellison Acquiring TikTok

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to consider Elon Musk as a buyer for TikTok, suggesting that the U.S. could hold a 50% ownership stake in the app.

“When asked if he would support Musk’s purchase, Trump replied, ‘I would be, if he wanted to buy it, yes,’” during an event at the White House where he introduced a new artificial intelligence infrastructure collaboration with tech leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son.

Elon Musk, known for leading Tesla and SpaceX, came into the picture as a potential buyer just days before a potential shutdown of the app. Trump signed an executive order on Monday, pausing any ban on TikTok for a period of 75 days.

The popular video-sharing app faced a brief shutdown on Saturday, lasting just over 12 hours, after the Supreme Court upheld a law compelling TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its American assets to continue operations in the U.S.

Trump also mentioned being open to another tech mogul, Larry Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle, acquiring TikTok. Ellison attended the White House event regarding a significant AI infrastructure partnership involving the Trump administration, OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle. Additionally, Oracle manages much of TikTok’s server infrastructure.

“I have the right to make a deal,” Trump stated to Ellison. “Let’s negotiate in front of the media.”

After discussions with TikTok’s owners, Trump conveyed his idea that a company should purchase the app and allocate half of it to the U.S. government. He reiterated the suggestion of a 50% stake in the app, which is used by 170 million Americans.

“They’ll have something that’s actually more valuable since they would have the ultimate partner, and the U.S. will provide substantial benefits regarding permits and other aspects,” Trump stated.

When questioned if he had TikTok installed on his phone, Trump replied, “No, but I think I might put it there.”

He added with a sense of nostalgia, “We won the young vote. I believe I secured that through TikTok. So, I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok.”

However, exit polls showed that former Vice President Kamala Harris led among voters aged under 30, garnering 54% compared to Trump’s 43%.
