All Aboard: Your Ultimate Guide to Traveling by Train with Your Car to Florida

This train can transport you and your car to Florida. Here’s what you need to know.

Many travelers on the I-95 corridor typically consider driving or flying as their main options, but a strong rail system along the East Coast provides trains as a viable alternative for numerous trips.

Among Amtrak’s most frequented routes is that connecting Boston and Washington, but further south, the railroad offers a distinct service aimed at those who wish to travel with their vehicle.

Every day, the Auto Train operates between Lorton, Virginia, situated just south of Washington, and Sanford, Florida, located near Orlando.

“This service delivers a unique travel opportunity – avoiding the stress of navigating over 800 miles on I-95 and instead enjoying a train ride with vehicles included,” said Amtrak spokesperson Kimberly Woods to YSL News.

This option can be ideal for those planning extended travels. Here’s how it operates.

Auto Train Route and Schedule

The Auto Train departs daily from Lorton to Sanford without any stops along the way. It leaves at 4 p.m. each day and arrives at 9 a.m. the following morning, making the total journey approximately 17 hours.

Check-in for travelers begins at 11:30 a.m. daily, closing at 2 p.m. for motorcycles and 2:30 p.m. for other types of vehicles.

Accommodations on the Amtrak Auto Train

There are two service classes on the Auto Train: standard coach seats equipped with leg and footrests and first-class bedrooms available in various sizes. The train also features a first-class dining car and a lounge area accessible to all guests. First-class customers receive priority boarding and complimentary meals for dinner and breakfast, while coach passengers are offered a free continental breakfast before they arrive.

What are the costs for Amtrak’s Auto Train?

Fares for coach tickets on the Auto Train start at $95 per person one way. Vehicle base rates are set at $155 for motorcycles, $225 for regular vehicles, and $255 for larger vehicles such as minivans, trucks, or SUVs with three rows of seating. Prices for rooms vary based on type and availability.

As an illustration, on February 18, a coach seat from Lorton to Sanford starts at $95, a roomette begins at $402 for one passenger and $589 for two, with larger rooms priced up to $886. Vehicle fees on that date are $255 for standard vehicles and $295 for extended ones, while motorcycle fees stay at $155.
