Understanding 50501: The Movement Behind Nationwide Protests
On Wednesday, protesters across the United States came together in a well-orchestrated initiative known as the 50501 movement, which gained momentum through social media.
According to a dedicated website, “50501 is a movement calling for 50 protests in all 50 states on the same day,” and urges participants to share anti-Trump sentiments online.
The organizers characterize this effort as a “quick-response, decentralized effort against the anti-democratic, harmful, and often unlawful activities of the Trump administration and its wealthy backers,” as noted on the “Build the Resistance” website.
Kay Evert, one of the movement’s organizers, revealed to YSL News that the initiative began as a concept shared on Reddit, which several activist groups then helped to organize, promote, and develop further.
“We are committed to maintaining the momentum,” she stated. “This movement is significant; it’s something no one can overlook. We aim to sustain this energy.”
A post on the 50501 subreddit stated that within less than two weeks, the movement has grown to include 72,000 participants planning 67 protests in 40 states.
50501 Movement Collaborates with Political Revolution
Moderators of the 50501 movement have also teamed up with Political Revolution, a political action committee and volunteer-driven activist group that emerged following Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.
In a joint press release, both the 50501 movement and Political Revolution announced calls for the resignation or removal of President Donald Trump, the investigation of his appointed officials such as Elon Musk, the revocation of “oppressive” executive orders, and the reinstatement of commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Evert added that the protests also target Project 2025, the conservative agenda that has resurfaced as Democrats criticized some of the early actions taken by the Trump administration.
“The aim is to unite Americans against a common threat: the Trump administration, those undermining our democracy, and anyone who seeks to divide us based on our differences instead of coming together as Americans,” the joint press release conveys.
