Chiefs Coach Discusses Super Bowl Training, Three-Peat Hopes, and Taylor Swift’s Treats
NEW ORLEANS — Ryan Reynolds, the Kansas City Chiefs’ head strength and conditioning coach, has been with the team for nine seasons, though he’s not the famous actor with the same name.
“I feel fortunate and grateful to be part of this organization,” Reynolds stated during a press conference on Wednesday morning. As a graduate of Arizona State University, he proudly holds three Lombardi trophies and hopes to add a fourth if the Chiefs win against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.
In his role, Reynolds is responsible for the players’ training in the practice and weightlifting areas, preparing them physically for game day.
“The players train earlier in the week as they have a set number of lifts to complete,” he explained. “We plan their training, and when they come in, we motivate them appropriately.”
After the AFC Championship victory over the Buffalo Bills, Reynolds mentioned that the team utilized the week leading up to the Super Bowl to finalize their strength and conditioning routines.
“This is important because we don’t know what conditions we’ll face when we arrive at the venue,” he noted. “Sometimes the facilities are NFL-standard, and sometimes we’re at a college level. Right now, we’re at Tulane, which offers basic amenities, but it’s not as comprehensive as what we have back in Kansas City.”
On game day, Reynolds will oversee the team’s pregame warm-up and hope that their preparation translates into success while ensuring they stay behind the sideline.
“The players have dedicated so much effort, and the coaching staff has everything finely tuned,” he said. “We’re ready to put everything on the line, give it our all, and hopefully secure a win.”
Reynolds shared that the most fulfilling aspect of his job is witnessing the offense succeed during tough plays, like converting on third or fourth downs with just a yard or two to gain.
“Seeing players like Joe Thuney, Trey Smith, or Creed Humphrey win their individual matchups and push for those extra yards against their opponents is incredibly rewarding,” Reynolds remarked. “It reaffirms the hard work put in at the gym.”
After nearly a decade with the Chiefs, Reynolds expressed appreciation for the surge in fan interest, especially due to Taylor Swift’s relationship with tight end Travis Kelce.
“She has become part of the team, and it’s been a positive influence,” he said, revealing his fondness for her homemade Pop-Tarts. “She brings in baked goods for the players and coaches, which has added a fun and exciting vibe over the last couple of years.”
