Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s Wild ‘Cheers’ Adventure: A Trip to Remember

Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson Share Memories of Leaving the ‘Cheers’ Set for a Mushroom Adventure

Stars of “Cheers,” Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, and George Wendt, are reminiscing about their time on the classic sitcom, specifically one notable incident where they traded drinks for something much stronger after leaving the set.

During a recent episode of Danson and Harrelson’s podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” they were joined by Wendt to talk about an adventurous “hooky day” they took, complete with a boat, some mushrooms, and a brewing hurricane.

This particular outing likely occurred while filming the 1982 episode titled “Any Friend of Diane’s,” which centers around Diane’s college friend visiting the bar. Seeing as the episode had a focus on her interactions with friends, Danson, who played Sam Malone, Harrelson as Woody, and the crew seized the chance for a day off.

“John (Ratzenberger) had just purchased a boat and wanted to show it off,” Wendt, 75, known for his role as Norm, recounted. “So we concocted this little getaway.”

“I remember we gathered at his boat. Woody and I were already a bit out of it,” Danson, 76, shared. “We used a payphone to call into the show claiming ‘I’m not feeling well, I can’t make it in.’ Then we passed the phone around.”

“I think someone joked about feeling seasick,” Wendt added with a laugh.

Danson described how Kelsey Grammer joined them on the boat and quickly fell asleep on the lower bunk after a long night of playing cards. It was then that Harrelson, 63, asked Danson if he had ever tried mushrooms.

“Woody asked me, ‘Have you ever had mushrooms?’ I admitted I hadn’t, and he said, ‘This seems like a perfect time since we have nothing going on,'” Danson recounted.

With nothing in his stomach, Danson ingested “an extraordinary amount of mushrooms.” By the time they were nearing California’s Santa Catalina Island, he began to feel “freaked out” by the mix of mushrooms and the residual waves from the hurricane, while Harrelson remained at ease.

Danson credited Wendt with helping him regain composure during his bad trip, recalling how he saw Harrelson as a skeleton, while Harrelson remarked that Danson looked like a hologram of himself.

Despite the unsettling experience, Danson expressed that he would be open to trying mushrooms again.

“I guess it depends on the situation,” Harrelson noted, giving some advice. “But certainly not while in the middle of a hurricane.”

Danson and Wendt were part of all 11 seasons of NBC’s celebrated sitcom, while Harrelson joined the cast starting from the fourth season.

Danson and Harrelson launched their podcast in May, as part of Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco podcast network.
