Alicia Silverstone raises alarms after trying potentially toxic fruit

Alicia Silverstone is unsure about the fruit she just ate, leaving fans anxious.

The “Clueless” actress, who is 47, posted a TikTok video on Monday where she took a bite of a fruit she discovered on the street in England, asking her followers for help with its identification.

“It was found on the street, and we were debating whether this was a tomato or not. It certainly isn’t, especially since these leaves look different,” she remarked in the video, showcasing the plant from which the fruit originated. “So what in the world is this?”

As she sampled the fruit, Silverstone commented, “I don’t think this is safe to eat. It resembles a pepper. Can anyone tell me what this is?”

Viewers in the comments speculated that the plant might be solanum pseudocapsicum, commonly referred to as Jerusalem cherry. According to Gardening Know How, the fruit of the Jerusalem cherry houseplant is known to be “toxic,” and “ingestion of any part of the plant can lead to poisoning and even death.”

Consuming even a few berries or leaves from a Jerusalem cherry could result in nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, and eating a larger quantity could lead to drowsiness, hallucinations, or heart rate irregularities, according to the Northern New England Poison Center.

YSL News has contacted Silverstone’s representatives for further information.

“Jerusalem Cherry, They are poisonous,” said one TikTok user, garnering over 6,000 likes on the comment.

Many fans questioned the logic behind Silverstone’s decision to eat something she wasn’t sure of.

“Eating random things from bushes without knowing what they are showcases a level of calmness that I can only admire,” one user jested, while another user inquired, “Who picks a random item they can’t identify and eats it?”

About 20 hours after her TikTok went live, Silverstone had not shared an update, increasing fan worries. “Can someone tell me when we know she’s alright?” asked one comment on the TikTok.

Silverstone posted the same video on Instagram, where fans expressed similar concern, including one follower who wrote, “Please stop eating fruits from unknown sources, ma’am.”
