Opinion: Nick Saban asked important college football question, and Vanderbilt offers a loud answer Nick Saban repeatedly asked one of his favorite rhetorical questions throughout his final season coaching Alabama. “Is this what we want college football to become?” Saban said, when discussing the pay-for-play revolution. It’s not what Saban wanted it to become, and

Kamala Harris: We Crave Substance Over Sentiment

Dear Kamala Harris: We need substance, not just feelings

Harris and Walz aren’t just campaigning to be liked – they’re vying for critical global leadership positions. The convention didn’t clarify how they’re qualified for these roles.

With the Democratic National Convention behind us, the race towards Election Day begins, featuring Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz leading the Democratic ticket.

Harris and Walz received a warm welcome in Chicago this week.

However, what remains unclear is why this reception occurred.

While many speakers praised Harris and Walz at the convention, most of their comments were based on emotions rather than concrete details.

So, what would a presidency under Harris truly entail? The answer is elusive.

Throughout the four-day event, the audience was treated to a lot of positive feelings. Harris is depicted as a supportive friend, kind-hearted, and enthusiastic.

Walz is characterized as a devoted father who enjoys flannel and has a coaching background. (His touching moment on stage with his children was heartfelt and should not be overlooked.)

However, the reality is that Harris and Walz are not seeking to be simply the public’s favorite – they aim for pivotal positions that shape the nation.

Yet the convention provided no clarity on their qualifications for these roles.

Harris is no stranger, regardless of Democratic claims

The Harris campaign and her Democratic supporters are attempting to portray the vice president as a newcomer, disconnected from the Biden administration she’s served in for the past four years.

Unfortunately for her campaign, Harris has played a significant role in the Biden administration, influencing aspects of the economy and immigration that many voters disapprove of.

As vice president, she cast a record number of tie-breaking votes (33) to advance some of Biden’s most controversial legislation.

Harris has avoided intense scrutiny by not participating in substantial interviews or press conferences, opting instead to participate in rallies where she is warmly welcomed. She stated she would conduct an interview by the end of the month, but we shall see.

It’s baffling that prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris was regarded as historically unpopular while serving as vice president. During her earlier vocal role in the administration, public reception was largely negative.

Additionally, when she launched her presidential campaign in 2019, she quickly exited before the first primary in 2020 due to low support.

This strange shift in her popularity as she announces her candidacy for 2024 is puzzling.

Americans deserve clarity from Harris

At a Politico event linked to the convention this week, Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’s campaign chair and Biden’s 2020 campaign manager, remarked: “Everyone knows who the vice president is, but many Americans don’t really know her well or understand her journey.”

I question this assertion; the American public has had ample exposure to Harris in recent years and did not respond favorably to it.

Once Biden’s ability to serve another term became questionable, the dynamics seemingly shifted among Democrats, prompting Harris to become the only viable candidate at the late stage of the campaign.

I genuinely want to understand what a Harris presidency would entail. Yet, even her official website lacks policy specifics. The limited proposals she has released, like housing subsidies and price control measures, seem poorly conceived and would potentially worsen the economic issues she claims to wish to resolve.

While Walz seeks to project an image of a quintessential Midwesterner, his governorship suggests otherwise, as he appears receptive to exorbitant socialist policies that are unsustainable for this country.

Harris mirrors this sentiment; examining her campaign proposals from four years ago and her voting record as one of the Senate’s most liberal members reveals a concerning trend.

What remains ambiguous is her current stance.

The convention’s concluding night was themed around “our future.” It was an opportunity to learn more about what this presidential ticket stands for.

Regrettably, that did not materialize.
