‘I’ve never witnessed a landslide like this’: Alaska landslide claims 1 life, injures at least 3

In southeastern Alaska, authorities have initiated mandatory evacuations in Ketchikan following a devastating landslide that demolished homes and businesses on Sunday, leaving at least one person dead and several others injured.

The landslide occurred at approximately 4 p.m. local time, causing significant damage to roads and cutting off power, according to Ketchikan officials.

“In my 65 years in Ketchikan, I have never seen a slide of this magnitude,” stated Mayor Dave Kiffer in a news release. “The loss of life we are facing is heartbreaking, and I extend my condolences to those who have lost their homes.”

As reported, one individual has died, and three others have been hospitalized with injuries of an unspecified nature.

Early Monday morning, a city emergency dispatcher informed YSL News that no further injuries had been reported.

The extent of displacement among residents is still unclear.

“Emergency crews have identified a possible secondary landslide area located south of the original site,” the city announced, indicating readiness among emergency responders.

Governor of Alaska issues disaster emergency declaration

On Sunday night, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a disaster emergency for Ketchikan.

“All state agencies are instructed to provide any necessary assistance,” the governor shared on X. “My thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Ketchikan as they face this challenge.”

Mandatory evacuation order issued

Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican, announced via social media that a mandatory evacuation order is now in effect for the impacted area.

“My team and I are prepared to assist with any federal support that might be required,” Sullivan posted on X. “I’ve engaged in positive discussions with Borough Mayor Rodney Dial and City Mayor Dave Kiffer, both of whom are focused on recovery efforts. Our thoughts are with the affected families, those injured, and the entire community.”

An emergency shelter has been established at a local high school, according to officials.

Power restoration planned as areas are deemed safe

As of early Monday morning, it was uncertain how many homes and businesses were without power.

The city indicated that power restoration would occur over the next few days once each area is assessed for safety, with the American Red Cross present on-site.

“During this time, let’s keep the families affected in our thoughts and know that we will do everything possible to recover swiftly from this incident and assist those in need. We are deeply grateful for the first responders, medical staff, volunteers, businesses, and everyone else providing support,” Borough Mayor Rodney Dial expressed.
