Eagle Encounters: The Unexpected Tale of the ‘Flightless’ Bald Eagle

A bald eagle thought to be hurt was actually just ‘too overweight to fly.’

X-rays revealed the presence of a raccoon paw in the eagle’s stomach during a health check.

A bald eagle discovered in Missouri, which initially seemed to be injured, actually had an unusual explanation for its inability to fly: it was overweight.

The Missouri Department of Conservation officials captured the eagle near the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield and temporarily placed it in their care, as noted in their Facebook update on August 21.

When an X-ray was taken at the Dickerson Park Zoo, it revealed that rather than suffering from an injury, the bird had simply been overindulging.

“The eagle, initially thought to be hurt, was actually healthy but stuffed with raccoon—that is to say, it was too heavy to fly,” the park stated.

Authorities believe that the raccoon might have been a road casualty, as described in the post. The X-ray images show what seems to be a raccoon paw inside the eagle’s digestion.

The eagle has since been released back into its natural habitat close to where it was rescued, following state and federal regulations.
