‘Disrespected sacred ground’: Harris criticizes Trump following Arlington National Cemetery controversy
On Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris commented on the conflict that arose between Donald Trump’s campaign team and an official from Arlington National Cemetery, claiming that Trump “disrespected sacred ground” for a mere political stunt.
This event, which occurred during a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, has garnered significant attention recently. Trump has actively discussed the matter at his campaign events on Thursday and Friday, defending his actions.
“They say I used their graves for public relations and I didn’t,” Trump stated during a rally in Pennsylvania on Friday.
Trump was attending a ceremony at Arlington to honor 13 soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan during the U.S. military’s withdrawal.
According to an Army statement, a cemetery official attempting to enforce rules against political activities was “abruptly pushed aside” by Trump’s staff. The official contacted police but later chose not to file any charges.
Despite the incident, political repercussions have continued.
Trump faces accusations of breaching the ban on campaign activities at one of the nation’s most revered sites. Some veterans have voiced their anger over the actions taken by Trump’s campaign, and Army officials seemed to indirectly criticize the Trump campaign for “unfairly” calling into question the professionalism of the cemetery official who was involved.
The Army noted that participants in Monday’s wreath-laying ceremony and the visit to Section 60, which holds the graves of recent U.S. casualties, were informed about federal law, Army regulations, and Department of Defense guidelines that “clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds.” Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign team was seen photographing and filming at the site.
“This is a sacred site; it is a location where we unite to pay tribute to American heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Harris remarked about the cemetery. “It should not be a place for political activities.”
Trump argues that his visit to the cemetery was not an attempt to gain campaign attention; instead, he claims to have been invited by the families of the fallen service members and felt obliged to participate despite scheduling conflicts.
“I don’t require the publicity,” he asserted.
