Harvey Weinstein is no longer faced with indecent assault charges in the UK.

On Thursday, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it has decided to “discontinue criminal proceedings” against the former film mogul after reassessing the evidence.

Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, stated, “The CPS has a responsibility to continually review cases, and we determined that there is no longer a realistic chance of conviction.” He also mentioned that victims of sexual assault should always feel encouraged to report incidents to the authorities, where prosecutions will proceed if legal criteria are satisfied.

Weinstein’s spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, expressed gratitude in a statement to YSL News, saying, “We appreciate this decision and are relieved to know that in some parts of society, justice still prevails.”

Engelmayer went on to say, “Mr. Weinstein is thankful to those who made this difficult conclusion possible.”

This ruling comes over two years after British prosecutors announced in June 2022 that they had approved two indecent assault charges against Weinstein, who is now 72, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The charges were related to an alleged incident involving a woman in 1996.

At the time of the charges announcement, Weinstein’s lawyer, Mark Werksman, criticized UK authorities, stating, “This exemplifies prosecution-by-ambush, where authorities present charges from 26 years ago by unnamed accusers without allowing Mr. Weinstein the opportunity to respond and defend himself, further damaging his reputation in the public eye.”

News about the UK case being dropped comes on the heels of a New York appeals court reversing Weinstein’s rape conviction in April. The court found that the judge had incorrectly allowed “irrelevant” and “prejudicial” testimonies during Weinstein’s original trial.

The ruling stated, “Permitting allegations without examination that harm a defendant’s character but do not clarify their credibility concerning the criminal charges is a misuse of judicial discretion.”

Weinstein is still serving a 16-year sentence from his 2022 rape conviction in California. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz confirmed that Weinstein will remain in New York while awaiting his retrial there.
