‘National Geographic at my front door’: Watch runaway emu stroll through neighborhood

Airiel Dawson, a resident of McKeesport, was taken aback when she spotted an emu casually walking through her neighborhood. Initially, she thought it was just a dream.

An emu, native to Australia, was recently seen enjoying a carefree stroll around a neighborhood in Pennsylvania.

Over the weekend, Airiel Dawson was stunned to find an emu roaming free in her Pittsburgh suburb, McKeesport. She quickly took to social media to share this unexpected encounter. Dawson expressed her disbelief, saying that without video evidence, nobody would believe her story.

She had her son fetch her phone and captured the emu as it wandered down the sidewalk and into the street.

The emu’s leisurely “hot girl walk” eventually came to a halt when it encountered a parked vehicle.

The emu was rounded up shortly after Dawson started filming, with police assisting the family in returning it home.

Describing the moment to WTAE-TV, Dawson said it felt like having “National Geographic at my front door.”

Dawson and others who witnessed the bird’s unexpected visit were left astounded by the emu’s presence.

You might encounter emus in a zoo, or you could find one wandering free like Dawson did, as some individuals keep them as pets. However, they are predominantly found in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and the Philippines, according to National Geographic.

Emus are the second-largest birds in the world, only smaller than ostriches. Both species belong to the ratite family, which includes flightless birds. According to National Geographic, emus typically eat fruits, seeds, plant shoots, and even small animals and insects.

“At first, I thought it was a dream,” Dawson explained to WTAE-TV. “So, when I stepped outside and saw it, I had to rub my eyes to be sure I was really seeing it.”
