LL Flooring, once known as Lumber Liquidators, is shutting down its 400-plus stores due to bankruptcy
After 30 years in business, LL Flooring is going out of business following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company stated that this was “not the outcome we had visualized.”
LL Flooring, an American flooring retailer, revealed its plan to close all stores, with liquidation sales starting on Friday, September 6.
Founded in 1993, LL Flooring expanded to have over 400 stores in 47 states, focusing on various types of flooring materials like bamboo, cork, hardwood, laminate, tile, and waterproof vinyl, according to their website.
This news comes nearly a month after LL Flooring declared bankruptcy. The company sought Chapter 11 protection after facing issues with liquidity and refinancing debts, as mentioned in court filings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
“We have engaged in negotiations with several interested buyers, but these talks did not lead to a financing offer that would optimize LL Flooring’s value,” stated Charles Tyson, the CEO of LL Flooring, in a letter to customers.
“Thus, it is with great sadness that we inform you about the commencement of the process to wind down LL Flooring’s operations and close all locations.”
According to the company’s website, closing sales will start on Friday, and they expect to shut down all stores within 12 weeks.

The History of LL Flooring
LL Flooring, which was originally called Lumber Liquidators, began as a small operation, launching “out of a pickup truck” in Stoughton, Massachusetts, approximately 21 miles south of Boston.
The company rebranded as LL Flooring in 2020 after experiencing a drop in stock prices, as reported by Floor Covering Weekly.
A 2015 investigation by CBS’s “60 Minutes” found that some of the company’s products had elevated levels of formaldehyde, which is a substance associated with cancer.
