Police on the Hunt for Shooter After I-75 Closure in Kentucky

In Kentucky, law enforcement is actively searching for a suspect involved in a shooting incident that led to the closure of Interstate 75 in the eastern part of the state for approximately three hours, as reported on social media.

According to a Facebook update from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, multiple individuals have sustained gunshot wounds. The suspect remains at large, as confirmed by Kentucky State Police spokesperson Scottie Pennington on the same social media platform.

The Sheriff’s Office has named 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch as a person of interest in this case, and they are urging anyone with information to contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center.

As per Pennington’s statements in a telephone conversation with The Courier Journal, the number of victims is estimated to be between four and six, though the seriousness of their injuries is still being assessed.

The shutdown of the highway occurred near Exit 49 and U.S. Route 25, roughly nine miles north of London, starting around 6:30 p.m. Laurel County is located about 90 miles south of Lexington and has a population close to 62,000, which includes portions of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Governor Andy Beshear addressed the incident on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“We are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County. Law enforcement has closed the interstate in both directions at Exit 49. Please steer clear of the area, and we will share more details as they become available,” he said.

London’s Mayor Randall Weddle also cautioned residents via a Facebook post to avoid the vicinity.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced on X that their agents are on the scene, supporting Kentucky law enforcement.

This incident on the interstate follows closely behind a tragic shooting at a Georgia high school, where a student killed two peers and two teachers, injuring nine others.

Additionally, just earlier in the week, one suspect was arrested following multiple shootings (at least seven) along Interstate 5 located in Seattle and Tacoma areas of Washington. These shootings spanned across a distance of 20 miles along the highway.
