Menendez Family Condemns Netflix’s ‘Monsters’ for Distorted Portrayal of Their Story

Menéndez family criticizes ‘grotesque’ Netflix series ‘Monsters’ for false claims

The Menéndez family has publicly condemned Ryan Murphy and Netflix.

Tammi Menendez, the spouse of Erik Menéndez, posted a statement on social media from “almost the entire extended family” of Erik and Lyle Menéndez, criticizing Murphy’s Netflix series “Monsters.”

This family group, which includes 24 members, slammed the show as a “phobic, grotesque, outdated episodic disaster that not only contains inaccuracies and blatant untruths but also overlooks the latest exonerating evidence.”

YSL News has reached out to Netflix and Murphy for their response.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” tells the story of the Menéndez brothers, who were found guilty of murdering their parents in 1996. The brothers claimed they acted in self-defense due to years of abuse from their father, José Menéndez.

In an earlier statement, Erik Menéndez criticized the Netflix series for its “caricature of Lyle based on horrible and blatant lies” and its “dishonest representation” of their narrative.

The extended family claimed that they feel “victimized” by the “disgusting shock drama” and stated that Murphy “did not speak to us” before producing the series.

“The character assassination of Erik and Lyle, who are our nephews and cousins, disguised as a ‘storytelling narrative’ is appalling,” they stated.

“We have known these men since they were little. We love them dearly and remain close to them. We have witnessed the unthinkable turmoil in their lives. Many of us have been witnesses to numerous horrors that no one should have to see.”

“It is unfortunate that Ryan Murphy, Netflix, and everyone involved in this show lack understanding of the impact of years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. In the end, it seems ‘Monsters’ is ultimately about Ryan Murphy.”

A particularly controversial aspect of the series suggests that Erik and Lyle Menéndez may have engaged in an incestuous relationship. There is a scene where they kiss on the lips, and another where their mother discovers them showering together. This latter moment is presented as a theory proposed by journalist Dominick Dunne, portrayed by Nathan Lane, who speculates that the brothers killed their parents to hide their relationship.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Murphy defended the show, explaining that his aim was to present various perspectives regarding the situation.

“The show is showcasing the viewpoints and theories from several individuals involved in the case,” Murphy remarked. “Dominick Dunne wrote extensively about that theory. We aim to convey his perspective, just as we do for (Menéndez attorney) Leslie Abramson. We have a duty to illustrate all of this, and we did.”

In their remarks, the family criticized Dunne, who passed away in 2009, labeling him a “pro-prosecution hack.”

Murphy further shared with ET that it’s “interesting” that Erik Menéndez issued a statement “without having seen the show,” adding, “I would estimate that 60-65% of our series focuses on the abuse and what they assert occurred, presented thoughtfully, while giving them their chance to speak.”

Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who plays Lyle Menéndez, also reacted to Erik Menéndez’s prior statement, expressing to YSL News that he feels “sympathy and empathy” for him, considering how hard it must be to have the most traumatic event of his life publicized for all to see.
