White Sox Triumph Over Angels, Yet Still Face Season’s Tough Reality With 120 Losses

Chicago White Sox Overwhelm Los Angeles Angels, Preserve Season Loss Record

Andrew Vaughn and Lenyn Sosa each contributed two RBIs during a dominant seven-run fifth inning, while Chris Flexen threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings. This performance led the Chicago White Sox to a 7-0 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, completing a series sweep.

Chicago (39-120) successfully avoided breaking the record for most losses in a single MLB season, which is held by the expansion-era 1962 New York Mets.

On the other hand, the Angels (63-96) set a new franchise record for losses in a season, surpassing the totals of teams from 1968 and 1980.

This was the White Sox’s second home sweep of the season, with 24 losses from being swept overall. Their only previous home sweep occurred from April 26-28 against Tampa Bay, where they also won three straight.

Chicago showcased their most powerful rally of the season in the fifth inning, sending 12 players to bat and highlighted by two hits from Dominic Fletcher.

Vaughn kicked off the scoring with a two-run single against Angels’ pitcher Tyler Anderson and later scored when Sosa hit a two-run double. The White Sox had five players reach base consecutively during this inning, with Bryan Ramos, Zach DeLoach, and Fletcher all contributing RBIs.

Los Angeles managed to get six hits, all of which were singles, with Logan O’Hoppe leading with two hits in four attempts.

Flexen managed to retire the first batter, Taylor Ward, who had a leadoff single, due to a double play grounder from Zach Neto shortly after. The seasoned right-hander then retired the next eight batters until Neto got a single with one out in the fourth inning.

With this game, Flexen (3-15) earned a victory for the first time since May 8, pitching a season-high 6 1/3 innings with five hits allowed, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

Anderson (10-15) gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits during 4 1/3 innings, with three walks, two strikeouts, and one hit batter.

Vaughn led the offense for the White Sox with three hits, while Sosa, DeLoach, and Fletcher recorded two hits each.

Neto left the game due to irritation in his right shoulder.

Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel was sidelined after exiting Wednesday’s game with a contusion to his lower right leg from a foul ball.

Chicago concluded the season series against the Angels with a 4-2 record.
