‘Multiple’ deaths reported after single-engine plane crashes in North Carolina


A fire ignited following the crash, leading to the aircraft’s destruction. The airport will stay closed until further notice.

A North Carolina airport is closed on Sunday after a single-engine aircraft crashed during its landing attempt, resulting in several fatalities, according to authorities.

 

On Saturday at 5:55 p.m. local time, a Cirrus SR22 airplane crashed near First Flight Airport at the Wright Brothers National Memorial, as reported via email by the National Transportation Safety Board to YSL News. This airport is situated in Kill Devil Hills on the North Carolina coast, about 90 miles south of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The aircraft landed in a wooded section of the airport, according to the National Park Service. Eyewitnesses mentioned that it was attempting to land when the incident occurred.

Following the crash, fire broke out and consumed the wreckage until it was extinguished by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire services.

North Carolina plane crash results in multiple fatalities

The park service confirmed, “Multiple passenger fatalities have been confirmed.”

According to the NTSB, four individuals were on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, but they could not provide information regarding their statuses.

When will First Flight Airport reopen?

The airport will remain shut down until further notice, as per the National Park Service. The Wright Brothers National Memorial will also be closed on Sunday.

 

The airport was closed on Saturday night after the crash, according to local news outlet CBS 17.

The NTSB is overseeing the investigation into the incident, and the Federal Aviation Administration has also been informed.
