Mastering the Art of DNA Droplet Division: Paving the Way for Synthetic Cells

A time-delay circuit enables precise control over the division of synthetic DNA droplets, which mimic biological Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation (LLPS) droplets found in cells. By utilizing a combination of microRNAs (miRNAs) and the enzyme RNase H, researchers have successfully regulated the timing of droplet division. This breakthrough paves the way for creating artificial cells with

Spirit Halloween Claps Back at ‘SNL’ After Spoof

The popular Halloween store and frequent occupant of empty spaces, Spirit Halloween, had a funny retort for “Saturday Night Live” on Tuesday after the comedy show posted a parody of the retailer online.

“SNL” kicked off its 50th season over the weekend, drawing in 5.3 million viewers for its premiere, which marked the show’s best start since 2020, according to the AP. Among the skits featuring Maya Rudolph impersonating Kamala Harris and a light-hearted dig at the trending hippo Moo Deng was a segment poking fun at Spirit Halloween’s knack for popping up in places where stores have recently closed.

NBC shared the sketch on their official X, previously known as Twitter, giving the Halloween retailer a chance to humorously respond.

The skit starts with a voiceover stating: “Communities are struggling. Closed stores. Shuttered businesses. Empty parking lots. When hard times hit, it’s easy to feel like no one cares. But help is on the way. Because when others leave, we show up,” it proclaimed. “We don’t see a dead-end town, we don’t see an abandoned Kmart, we see a Spirit. A Spirit Halloween.”

The parody continued, “We’re here providing vulnerable communities with the things they need most – wigs that give you a rash, single-use fog machines and costumes of famous characters tweaked just enough to avoid a lawsuit,” before playfully stating that Spirit stores not only occupy vacant buildings but also create “six-week jobs for some of America’s hardest-hit perverts.”

‘We’re Experts at Reviving Things’

The skit got some laughs, but Spirit Halloween was not about to let the jokes go unanswered.

“We’re great at raising things back from the dead @nbcsnl,” said Spirit in their response on X. They included a modified image of a Spirit Halloween costume package labeled “Irrelevant 50-year-old TV show” showcasing the “SNL 50 The Anniversary Season” logo.

Under the title, it listed “costume” features like “dated references,” “unknown cast members,” and “shrinking ratings.” Additionally, it humorously noted that one size fits most adults.

“Not gonna lie: this was funnier than many of the skits I have recently watched on ‘SNL.’ And I say this as a long-time fan of the show who still enjoys it for the most part,” commented one user on the post. “This is much funnier than their video,” agreed another, while a third simply stated, “This comeback might just be my favorite of 2024.”

On the flip side, some users defended “SNL,” asserting that the skit about the Halloween chain was not only amusing but also rather accurate.

“The skit was hilarious though… I almost choked when they mentioned the vacated Auto Zone,” one comment read. “SNL didn’t even stretch the truth with that sketch,” another added, while a third summed it up with, “SNL rules. Always has, always will.”

Though some users expressed disappointment that Spirit seemed to bring the heat with their post, the brand appeared to take it all in stride.

“Spooky laughs are the best kind,” Spirit replied to a commenter appreciating the joke. “Happy to hear it brought some Halloween cheer! Let’s keep the fun going all season long!”
