The Significance of October 3: Celebrating ‘Mean Girls’ Day

Why is October 3 ‘Mean Girls’ Day? Discover why this date is the ultimate ‘fetch’

If you’re a “Mean Girls” enthusiast, you probably recognize October 3 as a particularly “fetch” date.

Since this iconic comedy hit theaters in 2004, October 3 has been celebrated as “Mean Girls” Day. But what makes this day special?

At the beginning of the film, Cady Heron, portrayed by Lindsay Lohan, grows closer to her crush. During a voiceover that accompanies a montage of their moments together, she tells us, “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.”

“It’s October 3rd,” she responds in the scene.

This memorable moment has inspired fans to share memes and honor the film every year on this date. Even some cast members have joined the celebration.

In 2022, to promote her film “Falling for Christmas,” Lohan collaborated with Netflix for an Instagram post that read, “It’s October 3rd. now mark your calendars for November 10th.”

Lohan also shared an image from the film on Instagram in 2021 with the caption “It’s October 3rd.”

In 2020, Katie Couric brought together the original “Mean Girls” cast for a reunion after years since the film’s release.

New ‘Mean Girls’ movie released in early 2024

Tina Fey’s adaptation of the Broadway musical, a project inspired by the 2004 movie, adds a fresh take to the beloved story, according to Paramount Pictures, the company behind the project.

With Angourie Rice stepping into the role of Cady Heron, the film follows her journey as a newcomer in school, facing social challenges and developing feelings for Regina George’s (Reneé Rapp) ex-boyfriend, the head of the popular Plastics group.

YSL News’s film critic Brian Truitt rated the new musical ★★½ out of four, commenting that it “doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the stage version as much as it feels like a TikTok-inspired reimagining of the original Lindsay Lohan teen comedy – which we appreciated the first time, thanks – sprinkled with some show tunes.”

“It’s not entirely negative, but it primarily comes off as unnecessary,” Truitt noted.

Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., the remake, titled “Mean Girls” 2.0, was penned by Tina Fey, who also appears in the film, and had its premiere on January 12.
